A new version of Minecraft designed for classroom use is now available in early access. Minecraft: Education Edition was announced in January alongside Microsoft's acquisition of MinecraftEdu the team that had already been working on the game for teachers. The new version is free this summer until the per-student pricing model will be introduced for the academic year. More Microsoft has provided MinecraftEdu users a year of free access to Education Edition as a thank you. This will likely start after the trial ends.
Education Edition has some advantages over the standard version of Minecraft. Right off the bat, up to 30 students can learn and work together in the same virtual world without the need to create an account on a private server via a service such as Minecraft Realms. Teachers can create non-player characters (NPCs) to create an experience that is more guided, and provide them with web-based links to allow students access additional resources. A chalkboard item can be used to provide instructions, and students can also use a camera for taking photographs of their work, creating an in-game portfolio.
Microsoft states that it is working on other features requested by the public. The new interface offers teachers the ability to map out their classrooms with markers for each student, the ability to teleport users (should anyone wander off or mess up) and a chat window that can be used to manage private and class-wide conversations. Minecraft has already proven to be an effective education tool for teaching geoscience, art, and coding. Now that it has an official version for schools its potential and success are almost certain to grow.
