Magnetic compasses were first invented during China's Han Dynasty in around 200BC to help in fortune-telling. They were made of lodestone, naturally magnetic iron ore. It took around 1000 years before their descendants in the Song Dynasty figured out that they could be used to navigate as well. The first recorded use of a compass in both the Western and Islamic world was not until 1190.
They became very popular after that. Sailors realized they could use them to determine the directions of travel even when there was no stars or sun visible - allowing them to make much safer and more accurate journeys, particularly during the wintertime.
