Minecraft Graphics to Be More 'realistic'

A few days after an extended graphics update for Minecraft, Microsoft has unveiled an additional update for the block-based game's visuals.



The update improves the way light bounces around game areas to make Minecraft environments look more "realistic".



The graphics patch will only be available to Nvidia RTX users.



Microsoft has stated that it will be released in 2020 , but did not give a specific date.

The RTX graphics cards employ a technique called "ray tracer" which provides a better understanding of how light bounces around virtual environments in games.



It makes on-screen images appear more realistic because shadows, colours , and the movement of light in game environments will appear more real.



"Ray tracer is at the centre of what we think will be the next thing for Minecraft," said Saxs Persson, creative director of Minecraft at Microsoft, in an announcement.



"In normal Minecraft the block of gold looks yellow however, with ray tracing activated, you actually can see the specular highlight, you are able to see the reflection, and you may even see a mob reflecting in it," he said.



Writing on the Rock Paper Shotgun game news website, Katharine Castle said the update was "impressive in action".



She also mentioned that she was concerned about how easy Minecraft's RTX updates will be to use.



Ms Castle stated that it will require an "hefty" RTX to run all the various lighting effects, shadows and atmospheric effects simultaneously.

Prices for Nvidia cards differ widely among online retailers. Low-end cards usually cost more than PS300. The most expensive cards in the range could cost thousands of dollars. This update will be available for Windows 10.



Mojang, the Minecraft maker has announced that the update will be available as an option on the settings screen. This will allow players to test the update while it is being developed.

It also added that it was working on a more general overhaul of Minecraft's graphics engine. This could provide some visual improvements for people who do not have an RTX card or are unable to play the game on the PC.



Mojang has stated that, while not all devices will be capable of ray-tracing support but they will be able to provide graphics enhancements for the majority of devices. This general update is not scheduled to be released until a certain date.
