According to a study by Kaspersky's SecureList, Roblox malware is responsible for 9.6% of all gaming-related cyberthreats. This is based on the number related to malicious or unwelcomed files. The platform trails only Minecraft and FIFA which are responsible for 25.2 percent and 11.7 percent of these threats respectively.
Kaspersky is a renowned cybersecurity firm that employs AI-driven technology to guard against viruses and hackers. The company created the gaming-related cyberthreats report to warn players of the latest cyberthreats and provide information on the most prevalent and dangerous malware they could encounter.
The study analysed the risks and statistics associated with cryptocurrency miner attacks, threats masquerading as game cheaters, and data thieves. Kaspersky then composed an inventory of the top 28 most-loved game series that were available or about to be available on Steam and Origin, along with tiles that are platform independent, to determine which were the most dangerous. Alongside Roblox the list also includes Minecraft, Grand Theft Auto, Need for Speed, Call of Duty, FIFA, Game of the Day, and PlayerUnknown's BattleGrounds (PUBG).
The security firm found that the top five PC games that were used as bait for cybersecurity threats between July 1, 2021 to June 30, 2022, included Minecraft, Roblox, Need for Speed, Grand Theft Auto, and Call of Duty. The top mobile games used during the same time frame were Minecraft, Roblox, Grand Theft Auto, PUBG and FIFA.
The organisation reviewed 91.984 files that contained malware and potentially unwanted programs. The files were distributed to 384,224 users who were using the game's popular titles as a way to lure them. It was ranked Roblox as the third most frequent threat vector by the number of related malicious or unwanted files (8,903) and the second in terms of number of affected users (38,838) which is less than Minecraft (131,005).

Kaspersky's analysis suggests that multiplayer gaming platforms might pose an even greater threat than other games, particularly pointing towards Minecraft and Roblox as examples.
"Worryingly, the primary target of these games are teens and children who have a lesser knowledge of cybersecurity due to their lack of experience," the report says. "Because of this we assume that they are a prime to be the next victim of cybercriminals. This implies that cybersecurity hygiene education for children must be given special attention."
The company also notes that malware and other unapproved software that is distributed as cheats pose significant threats, especially for those with a particular desire for a particular game series.
"Most often, players get malicious software, which steals sensitive information from their devices when trying to download a popular game on a third-grade website instead of purchasing it from the official site," the report continues.
These usually include "cracked" software versions of popular games, which is a term used to describe games that people try to download illegally and play for free , instead of paying retail prices. However, many people mistakenly download malicious versions of games by clicking on misleading links to websites that appear to be legitimate content.
Kaspersky offers a number of suggestions for gamers to help them defend themselves from malware, hacking attacks, phishing, and other threats. These include activating two-factor authentication on all accounts and using unique and secure passwords, and double-checking download URLs to ensure they are authentic. Kaspersky also recommends avoiding cracked software and other illegal content, like cheating.
