GlyphosateThe reason farmers decide to cultivate organically using glyphosate to ensure we will have food for many years to come.
It's evident that the world's population is growing. By 2050, the world's population is expected to be 9.7 billion people in the world--over two billion more than today.1 However, the world's farmable land isn't growing with the population. This poses significant challenges to farmers who are responsible for providing high-quality food for Canadians and others around the world.

Canada is the fifth largest exporter of food products in the world.2 Canadian farmers will be essential in supplying food for the growing population. グリホサート They will face higher demands than they have ever had and will also have to control the effects of pests, diseases, and changes in weather to ensure that their land is fertile and productive for generations to come.

To meet the growing demands, farmers will need to produce 70% more food in 2050. *Source: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, How to provide food for the world by 2050.

Farmers can't meet this rising demand by themselves. The latest tools and technologies including herbicides such Glyphosate allow farmers to manage weeds effectively and efficiently, leading to a more sustainable, secure supply of food.

What is the exact meaning of Glyphosate?

Glyphosate is a multi-purpose, non-selective herbicide that has been utilized by farmers, land managers and gardeners around the world for over 40 years. It works by blocking the enzyme that plants (in this case unwanted weeds) require to grow. グリホサート The enzymes are not present in animals or humans.4 Glyphosate is not any risk to them when it is used in a safe manner.

Glyphosate can be utilized for other reasons than just agriculture. It is also utilized in municipal green spaces to protect animals from poisonous weeds.6 The glyphosate can also be utilized on railway lines to improve the purpose of reducing fire risk and visibility.

Recently, there's been increased attention to the use of glyphosate in our everyday lives. グリホサート While it is important to be aware of the ingredients in our food, it is worth noting that more than 160 health regulatory bodies around the world such as Health Canada, agree that the use of glyphosate in a safe manner for humans is possible if properly done.

Canadians should be able to be aware of what glyphosate actually means, how it is used and the benefits it brings to food production.

Glyphosate can be used in the process of grow crops.

Glyphosate-based herbicides offer a variety of advantages for farmers, customers and the environment. グリホサート This is vital for effective control of weeds, a secure food supply and sustainability of the environment. Let's take a look at each.

According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, global farmers could lose between 30-40% and 50% of their crops to weeds, pests and diseases. This is particularly devastating for farmers as these crops are their livelihood.

Therefore, it's no wonder that farmers have come to depend on tools they can rely on year after year. Applying glyphosate to the fields- especially with glyphosate tolerant crops -- is an effective method to keep weeds that are destructive from taking over crops.9 To date, no other weed control method offers the same level of efficiency, both in terms of practical and economically.

Crops against. Weeds: the battle of their lives

A farmer's crops will be competing with up to 30,000 species of weeds to get space food, water, nutrients and light.9 Glyphosate gives crops an edge.

Canadians and global consumers reap the benefits of abundant, affordable food items

The population is growing and half of the land that is used for food production in Canada is at risk of being unusable within 40 years.10 This could lead to a greater risk of food shortages. Canadians would be paying 55% more if modern agriculture innovations were not applied, for example, the use of glyphosate.11

Furthermore, it could be increasingly difficult to find the food that we love. However, the positive side is that farmers will continue to grow our favourite staple foods thanks to the science behind breeding plants.

Glyphosate can help to manage the weeds and ensure that produce is affordable at the grocery shop. Glyphosate is also used by farmers to take care of what Cherilyn Joy-Nagle, a resident of Mossbank in Saskatchewan refers to as "their greatest asset"--their property.

Keep the food we love on our tables

When crop protection tools, including glyphosate, are used to protect crops from pests and diseases the farmers are able to grow:

42% more grains , such as corn and wheat

72% more fruits

The advantages of glyphosate are clear. But is Glyphosate safe?

Simply said it, yes. And, like every other pesticide, it is best to use according to the directions on the label. The glyphosate usage regulation in Canada is overseen by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. This agency inspects crops for pesticide residue to make sure farmers are using it correctly. It also has the Pest Management Regulation Agency (PMRA) that provides guidelines, evaluations of submissions to the product and rejections or approvals. They are home to one of the most comprehensive evaluation processes anywhere in the world.

While regulatory agencies are responsible to ensure that farmers are using the correct herbicides as well as manufacturers, farmers are essential in making sure that glyphosate is utilized safely and correctly so that there isn't any unintended harm to the environment, animals or even humans.

Furthermore the use of precision agriculture has allowed farmers to utilize data and enhance their ability to apply glyphosate precisely to the exact areas and quantities.

グリホサート When it comes to the residue of pesticides, it's very rare for glyphosate residue to be found on food items and, in the case of limits and deemed to be harmful, it can cause harm. The CFIA makes sure that farmers apply herbicides properly and work within set residue limits.16 On the rare occasions that it is found in low levels (e.g., 1 part per billion), it is well below the limit established by the Government of Canada, and is not a safety or health issue since it does not pose any risk to humans or animals.18

Glyphosate is an ingredient used in sustainable farming practices

Glyphosate is a staple ingredient used by farmers as part of integrated pest and weed management practices. This means that they are using more than herbicides to manage weeds. Glyphosate has helped them implement conservation tillage/no-till practices that provide long-term benefits for the soil, air, and our surroundings as a whole which include:

To decrease or stop plowing or tilling of land

- Lower CO2 emissions

Capturing carbon inside the soil

Improve soil health

- Reducing the amount of water runoff and limiting erosion13

"No pesticide regulatory body anywhere in the world has ever considered the glyphosate ingredient to pose an increased risk of cancer for humans at the current concentrations." - Health Canada (January 11, 2019).

グリホサート Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.

It is now more important than ever to ensure Canadian farmers are equipped with the technological and tools they need to feed a growing population.

By following the best agricultural, pest control and food safety procedures, farmers will ensure that our food supply is healthy and plentiful. Glyphosate is only one of many tools they'll employ to make sure that Canadians as well as other people around the globe can access healthy and affordable food, now and in the future.
