Overview
Vanilla Minecraft can be quite fun, but it can become boring. Being in a position to add new features to the game without waiting for Mojang to make it happen could be the key to easing any boredom that you might experience in your server. This is where plugins come into play.
Plugins are server-side pieces of software that allow you to add features to servers without having to make any client-side modifications that you might need to with mods. There are hundreds of thousands of plugins that are available on the internet, meaning that there's almost never a moment where you won't find something you want or need.
To install plugins, your server needs to be running Spigot or Paper. Both will accept plugins from the Spigot and Bukkit websites. If you're unsure of what to do to update your server version you can read our guide here.
How to Install Plugins Through the Plugin List
At Apex Hosting, we have a great curated list of plugins from Bukkit and Spigot that are directly integrated in your panel. This will be one of the most simple ways to install plugins on your Java server.
1. Log in to your Apex Hosting Panel and select the server you wish to install the plugins on.
2. Select Plugin List on the left side of the panel.
3. You can choose to make use of Spigot or Bukkit as your source. The only difference could be the results you receive. Both plugins must work on the server.
4. You can then look up specific names of plugins, or by category. Once you find a plugin that you would like to install, click it.
5. Make sure that the compatible version is listed at the top of this page for your server version. You should make sure that Paper 1.16.5 is compatible with Paper 1.16.
6. Once you verify there is a compatible version , you can choose it from the Version dropdown menu. Then click install to the right! Check your server console to verify that the installation is complete.
7. Once the process is finished, make sure you restart your server for the plugin to load.
How to Install Plugins using FTP
Sometimes the plugin list may not have the plugin you are searching for. In that case you might have to look online for an immediate download of a plugin Jar file. There are a few popular sites to download plugins like the Dev Bukkit site, the SpigotMC site, and occasionally directly from developers' sites or github pages. The best way to search for a plugin online is to just search for the name or keywords.
1. You can download the plugin jar file online.
2. Log in to your panel by clicking the FTP File Access tab.
3. Once you've logged in, locate and click on the plugins folder.
4. Once you're inside the plugins folder, click upload to the left and drag in your Jar file.
5. Once the file has been fully uploaded, you can return to your main panel page.
6. Restart the server to allow the plugin to load.
Common Problems
Plugins Not Loading:
Sometimes, plugins won't load after restarting the server. Run /plugins in the game to determine if a plugin has been loaded. If it's green, it is loaded. If it's not on the list or red then there might be a problem. Verify that the plugin is compatible to the version of your server. Also, look at the plugin page to make sure it does not have any dependencies. Sometimes, if you restart the server and watch the console output, it could identify exactly what the error is or what plugin is not working to make it work.
Plugin List Download Failure:
If you attempt to download a plugin using the Plugin List in your control panel and it gives you errors like "Error downloading plugin" This could mean that there is an issue with the source site of the plugin. If this occurs we suggest that you manually install the plugin onto the server using the FTP section of this guide.
No Plugins Folder
If you try to manually install plugins to your server and cannot locate the plugins folder, it's possible that your server doesn't allow plugins. Minecraft servers Or you may have forgotten to restart after changing versions to Spigot/Paper. Check the Jar File dropdown in your panel to ensure that your server is compatible. Some compatible versions include Spigot, Paper and Magma.
