If you're unfamiliar with the Helsinki-based musician, Antti Reikko, you're in for a real treat. The band's debut album, Songs of Hope and Science, is one of the best debuts of 2016. Despite the band's success in their hometown, this album has yet to receive any blog love, but it's definitely worth checking out. The following is a quick guide to the album and some thoughts on Reikko's music.
Antti Reikko's solo work as Koria Kitten Riot
Singer-songwriter Antti Reikko's work as Koria Kitten Riot is a rare mix of ambitious instrumentation and intimate songwriting. The band's self-titled debut album was released in October of last year, but has yet to receive much attention from the blogosphere. While Reikko is best known as the lead singer of Finnish band Johnny Superhero, his latest solo effort has a more accessible, positive approach to pop music.
The music on 'The Earth Will Spin Around' is a perfect example of a'single-handed' concept. Reikko performs all instruments on the album, from synthesizers to acoustic guitars. Additional contributions include harmonica and mandolin. Reikko recorded the music in his bedroom, and Eino Anttila mixed the final tracks.
Antti Reikko's influences
Finns have a way of putting their own twist on the world, and the debut album by Helsinki, Finland's Koria Kitten Riot is no exception. Lead vocalist Antti Reikko cites his influences as The Flaming Lips, Wilco, and Elliott Smith. The band recorded the album in Berlin, and Doug Van Sloan handled the mastering.
Besides Elliott Smith, Reikko also draws inspiration from Neil Young and Sufjan Stevens. His songwriting approach evokes the sounds of the latter two artists. Sunny Day Real Estate, for example, incorporated a melody from Elliott Smith's Pheurton Skeurto. This album evokes the realism and intimacy of singer-songwriters of the 1970s.
Singer-songwriter Antti Reikko draws inspiration from Wilco, Elliott Smith, and The Flaming Lips for his melodic songs. Learn More is based in Berlin and recorded their third album, Rich Men, Poor Men, Good Men, in January 2014. At home in Finland, Koria Kitten Riot plays an acoustic set before a live show and then picks up the pace as the evening progresses.
Songs of Hope and Science
With her new album Songs of Hope and Science, Koria Kitten Riot pokes humanity with a big stick while showing the frailty of life. But despite all the dark nuances of life, her songs have a hopeful and inspiring tone. Though the lyrics are sometimes dark, Koria Kitten Riot's songs are written in a familiar style, which gives them a comforting, optimistic feel.
