The Avanos MedicalCortrak*2 Enteral Access System was designed to assist medical professionals who are trained to insert medical feeding tubes in the stomach or small bowel of patients who require to get nutrition through the tube. The feeding tube has been implicated in 23 deaths since 2015.
There have been numerous reports of injury and death among patients who lost their nasogastric tube.
This recall is being used to update the device's labeling, which includes the instructions on how to use it. Patient's vocal cords, lungs, vocal cords and the trachea can be damaged when the nasogastric/nasoenteric tube is placed improperly. This could cause grave injury or even death.
Avanos Medical Avanos Medical recalls that there was a total of 60 incidents and 23 deaths resulting from the incorrect placement of nasogastric tubes in the last year. Avanos Medical Avanos Medical feeding tube Pneumothorax, respiratory failure perforation (a hole, in the wall, or stomach) and pneumonia were all reported.
Avanos Medical sent a field correction notice on March 21st 2022 to all customers who used the devices between January 2021 & January 2022. The notice contained the following instructions:
Check the positioning of the Nasogastric tubes as well as nasoenteric tubes in accordance with the institution's policies.
Attach the correct notice in the field regarding the issue to the operator's guide.
