Avanos promotes the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System due to its ability to see the stomach of a patient and their small bowel. This allows for the placing of a medical feed tube. Cortrak 2 eternal access system Patients could suffer damage to their vocal chords or trachea if the tube has been placed in a wrong way. Avanos Medical recalls that there have been 60 injuries, 23 deaths and 23 illnesses resulting from the misplacement or inadvertent insertion of a nasogastric feeding tube using the CORTRAK*2 Entral Access System. Avanos Medical The lungs fail, there is pneumothorax (collapsed lung tissue) perforation (a hole in the esophagus or the bowel wall), pneumonia, and an excess of fluid between the lungs (the chest cavity and lung tissue) have all been among the traumas.
Avanos Medical described a plan for users to get updated labeling in order to confirm proper positioning of the nasogastric tubes and nasoenteric pipe prior to use.
Avanos was the second alert that was issued by the FDA in 2022 regarding enteral nutrition tubes. In February, the FDA issued a caution to health professionals and parents about the risk of strangulation when children use feeding tubes. Two cases were reported of strangulation among children who had a feeding tube that was wrapped around their necks.
