Kosher Salt and Its Benefits
Kosher salt is a coarse, non-iodized form of salt. It is used in cooking but is free from common additives, including iodine. Instead, it is made up mostly of sodium chloride and anticaking agents. If you are a kosher observant, you may want to switch to this salt for your cooking needs. Read on to find out more about kosher salt and its benefits.

Pickling salt is a good kosher salt substitute

While kosher salt is traditionally made from a variety of sea salts, there are also many other alternatives that are equally effective. Sea salt has no additives, and is a reasonable substitute for pickling salt. Typically, buy kosher salt has a higher moisture-retention factor than fine sea salt, and may take a bit longer to dissolve than fine sea salt. If you prefer coarse salt, you can use one-half cup of coarse sea salt, but be careful to measure it properly.

When substituting pickling salt, it is best to use kosher table sea-salt. Sea salt is free of additives and traces of iodine, and measures differently than regular table salt. In addition, flake rock salt is a pure form of salt without anti-caking agents or iodine. While kosher salt is not iodized, it is a good pickling salt substitute, as it is inexpensive and free of iodine.

It is cheaper

If you're concerned about the price of table salt, kosher salt is the way to go. Most of us don't use as much salt as we should, but buying it in bulk will save you a considerable amount of money. It is also more versatile, and has large grains, making it easier to distribute evenly. Kosher salt is especially beneficial for curing and salting meat before cooking, as well as for adding a briny flavor to savory dishes. However, the cost of kosher salt is 20% higher than table salt, and it is recommended that you buy it in bulk.

Kosher salt comes in two types: Morton's and Diamond Crystal. Diamond Crystal is finer than Morton's, and is cheaper. Morton's is more expensive than Diamond Crystal, but Morton's is a better choice for baking and seasoning. The latter is more dense, and tends to dissolve twice as fast as Diamond Crystal. Diamond Crystal is generally preferred by chefs because it is easier to use.

It is more potent

Sea salt and kosher salt both have similar flavors but sea salt is coarser than table-salt. Both are potent and give the same salty sensation. Sea salt is also less processed than table-salt, so its minerals and trace elements are more intact. It is available in both coarse and fine grains. The amount to be used for a given dish depends on the size of the grains, but sea salt will be more potent than kosher salt.

Pickling salt is not a substitute for kosher salt. Its crystals dissolve quickly on food surfaces and stick better than kosher salt. It is also used for table-top seasoning. However, it is not a good substitute for kosher salt. Kosher salt contains higher levels of sodium, which is a key ingredient in many recipes. So, when choosing between kosher salt and pickling salt, you should always stick with the brand you prefer.

It is easier to use

Kosher salt comes in many forms. Morton's, Diamond Crystal, and Himalayan Pink Salt are two major brands. Each produces different results when used in cooking. Morton flakes are more dense, and Diamond Crystal is less dense, allowing more crystals to fit into each granule. It is better for cooking in large amounts and for boosting flavor. But whichever salt you use, it is important to use the right amount for your recipe.

When cooking, kosher salt is more useful than regular table-salt. The large grain size allows you to control the amount of salt you use for different dishes. It also adds a brine flavor to savory dishes, and it's easier to sprinkle evenly than table salt. The downside, however, is that it costs more than table-salt - at least if you buy it in bulk.
