Overview

Vanilla Minecraft can be quite fun, but it can get stale. Mojang is able to introduce new features to the game however, you don't need to wait for them to implement them. This can help alleviate the boredom on your server. Plugins are a great way to do this.

Plugins are server-side pieces of software that can add features to servers without the need to make any client-side modifications that you might need to with mods. There are hundreds of thousands of plugins available across the internet so there's almost never a moment when you don't have something you're looking for or want.

To install plugins your server needs to be running either Spigot or Paper as the server version. Both will accept plugins downloaded from Spigot and Bukkit websites. If you're not sure how to change your server's version, read our guide here.

How to Install Plugins Through the Plugin List

Apex Hosting have a comprehensive list of plugins from Bukkit and Spigot that is directly integrated in your panel. This is one of the easiest methods to install plugins on your Java server.

1. Log in to your Apex Hosting Panel to select the server where you wish to install the plugins.

2. Select Plugin List on the left hand side of the panel.

3. On this page, you can choose either Bukkit or Spigot as the source. The only difference could be the results you receive. Both sources of plugins should be compatible with the server.

4. You can search by name or category for plugins. Click on the plugin you want to install after you've found it.

5. At the top of the page, verify that there is a compatible version for your server version, e.g. If your server is running Paper 1.16.5 you should ensure that there is one that is compatible with 1.16.

6. Once you've verified that the version you're using is compatible, you can select it from the Version dropdown menu. Then, click on the install button to the right. You can verify the process is completed by checking your server console.

7. Once the process is complete Restart your server to allow the plugin to load.

How to Install Plugins using FTP

Sometimes the plugin list may not have the plugin you are looking for. You may have to look online for a direct plugin Jar file download. There are many popular sites to download plugins such as the Dev Bukkit site, the SpigotMC website, and sometimes directly from developers' web pages or github sites. The best way to search for plugins online is to search for the name or keywords.

1. Download the plugin jar file from its source online.

2. Log in to your panel by clicking the FTP File Access tab.

3. Once you have registered, find and click on the plugins folder.

4. Once you're in the plugins folder, click upload to the left and drag into your jar file.

5. After the file has been fully uploaded After that, you can go back to the main panel page.

6. Restart the server to allow the plugin load.

Common Problems

Plugins Not Loading:

Sometimes plugins may not load after restarting the server. Run /plugins in the game to see whether a plugin has been loaded. If it is green then it should be loaded. If it is not in the list, or red, there may be an issue. Check that the plugin is compatible to your server version. Also, go to the page for the plugin to ensure that it does not have any dependencies. Sometimes, if you reboot the server and then watch the console output it may identify exactly what's wrong or what plugin is not working to make it work.

Plugin List Failure:

If you attempt to download a plugin through the Plugin List in your panel and it shows you errors such as "Error downloading plugin" This could indicate that there's a problem with the plugin's source site. If this happens we suggest that you manually install the plugin on your server following the FTP section of this guide.

No plugins folder:

If you are trying to manually install plugins on the server, but are unable to locate the plugins folder, then either your server isn't able to accept plugins, or you not have restarted after changing versions to Spigot or Paper. Verify that your server is compatible by looking up the version you have selected in the Jar File dropdown on your panel. Certain compatible versions would be Spigot, Paper, Magma, Thermos and Cauldron.
