It's a brilliant initiative evidently. I would have killed millions of dollars to have something close to as engaging or videogame-like as Minecraft is used as a learning tool in schools, at any age. I'd still like it that the PCGN style guidelines and policy documents were taught to me through the method of blocks instead of horrible words. As always, the key is to get people excited about learning so that they enjoy it and take it in.
The FAQ provides more details, including the cost. It costs $5 per user for a year that's an affordable price considering the number of schools in America and the potential applications. Although I wouldn't expect Microsoft to offer it at no cost since these students will be using it in class There are bound to be numerous benefits.
Schools aren't the only ones that will have access though museums and libraries will be able to buy copies to use what they want to. There are a lot of custom-designed resources available already and more are in the pipeline should they be successful. If things continue along this track two billion dollars seems like a lot.
