Avanos Medical, a U.S. Avanos Mediacal Cortrak 2 Food and Drug Administration (FDA) company is recalling Cortrak*2 enteral access device because of a misplaced nasoenteric tube or nasogastric tubs that could have resulted in injuries or even deaths of patients. The recall covers 629 devices that are currently available in the United States.
Avanos promotes the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System due to its ability to visualize the stomach and small bowel. This permits the installation of a medical feed tube. Patients may suffer injuries to their vocal cords, lungs, or the trachea, if a tube is not properly placed. Avanos Medical's recall notice states that, since 2015 there has been 60 deaths and 23 injuries due to incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tubes using the CORTRAK*2 enteral access system. The Avanos warning is the second warning that the FDA issued in 2022 about tube feeding through the stomach. Avanos Medical In February, the FDA issued a caution to health professionals and parents regarding the danger of strangulation in children who use feeding tubes. Two deaths from child strangulation took place in 2021 because of the tube being wrapped around a patient’s neck.
