Avanos Medical (U.S. Food & Drug Administration) has announced that it will be recalling Cortrak*2's enteral access system. https://www.justice.gov/usao-ndtx/pr/avanos-medical-pay-22-million-resolve-criminal-charge-related-fraudulent-misbranding The recall was initiated because of injuries to patients and deaths resulting from the misplacement of nasoenteric/n tubes. The recall includes 629 devices that are currently available in the United States.
Avanos has launched the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System for its on-screen visualization of a patient's stomach , or small bowel to assist in the proper placement of a medical feeding tube. Incorrectly inserting a tube can result in damage to the vocal cords, lungs , and trachea. Avanos Medical's recall notice states that since 2015, there has been 60 deaths and 23 injuries related to the incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tube when using the CORTRAK*2 access system. Avanos Medical has described a plan to supply users with new labels, which will confirm the proper placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tube prior to use.
Avanos is the second caution that the FDA has issued about intra-oral feeding tubes. The FDA warned parents and healthcare professionals about the risk of strangulation for children who use feeding tubes. Two deaths from child strangulation was reported in 2021 as a result of a tube that was tied around the neck of a child.
