When the mobile-based Minecraft Earth was announced last year, it immediately attracted comparisons to Pokemon Go because of its use of virtual reality and activities that are based on location. However, it was quite different (as senior editor Jess Conditt will attest), since it didn't require you to actually go outside to play the mining and building game. Now, Mattel has added another play dimension to Minecraft Earth that Pokemon Go can't really boast about: NFC-enabled figurines.

The Boost Mini figures will retail for $5 each and will include several characters from the Minecraft franchise, including Steve, Alex, creepers, ducks and a cow. Each figure is adorable on its own, however placing it against an NFC-capable device can unlock specific abilities within Minecraft Earth for a certain period of time, which is displayed by a timer on the screen. You'll also earn XP for registering the mini with the game as a further incentive to collect all of them (or borrow from friends).
This spring's first batch includes 20 minis that have 10 abilities. If you're someone who plans to take your Minecraft Earth game out and out, Mattel is also selling a carrying case with a shape like a potion that can be clipped to your belt.
If you're not interested in the new game specifically but want to experience that sweet Minecraft toy action Mattel has also revealed a range of brand new $3.50 blind box minis that are themed to vanilla Minecraft and larger 3.5-inch figures that will be part of the upcoming Minecraft Dungeons. The Redstone Monstrosity, which is over six inches tall, is especially enjoyable as it's designed to match the toys. The 3.5-inch figurines cost $10, and the monstrosity will cost $25 when it's launched in the fall.
