Crafting is the process of creating tools, items, and blocks in Minecraft. Crafting is the process of moving items from an inventory to a crafting grid and arranging them according an established recipe. A crafting table can access a 3x3 grid and two-by-two crafting grid. Items made within the 2x2 grid can also be crafted in the crafting table.

2x2 Crafting grid (inventory)

3x3 Crafting grid (crafting table)

Players in Creative,[Bedrock Edition only] Survival, Adventure, or Spectator[Java Edition only] always have access to the 2x2 grid of crafting from their inventory screen. There are a few small crafting recipes that are possible to make that are no more than 2x2. These include crafting tables, sticks and crafting boards, torches and other items that are not shaped. To create items using a 3x3 grid you need to create a crafting table using four planks of wooden placed in the middle of the universe and press the use button while facing it. The interface will appear with a 3x3 grid that players can use to create any recipe for crafting in the game. You can also access all crafting recipes in the recipe book.

Some recipes do not require the ingredients to be laid out in a particular way on the crafting grid. They are often referred to as recipes that are not shaped. For example, players can create a fermented spider's eye by putting its ingredients anywhere within the grid. [note 1]

However, many recipes require that ingredients are placed in the right locations on the grid for crafting. These are also known as shaped recipe. Shaped recipes allow ingredients to be moved upwards or downwards or left, right, or both. They can also be turned to the side. For instance, a 3-x1 recipe, such as bread, can be created using the top, middle or the bottom row of the 3x3 grid. It is not possible to create using the 2x2 grid as it requires three items to be covered. A bow is made by placing the strings on the left.

Some recipes cannot be moved or mirrored in this manner. These are often referred to as fixed recipes. For instance, dyes used in banner recipes must be placed in a specific way to achieve the desired pattern. [Bedrock Edition only] Data packs and mods can be added to fixed recipes.

Crafting is completely quiet, unlike other in-game actions like boiling, smelting, and captivating.

This wiki's recipes with no shape are marked by two intertwined arrows on the crafting table graphic. This symbol is not used in the game. Recipe Book[]

The recipe book is a feature in Minecraft that serves as a catalog of recipes and also as a crafting reference. It lists every crafting recipe the player has attempted using materials.

There are a variety of ways to organize crafting recipes, such as the following:

- The first tab contains every recipe that is unlocked. - The second tab contains weapons, tools and armor. The third tab is filled with building materials. The fourth tab is food items and miscellaneous items. The fifth tab is made up of redstone materials. Recipe system[System for Recipes[

Data packs for Java Edition and add-ons to Bedrock Edition can be used to set up recipes, which includes crafting recipes. There are currently 379 crafting recipes available as of 1.16.

Certain recipes can be animated to save space (requires JavaScript). This wiki categorizes recipes that are not shapeless with a pair intertwined, linked arrows on its crafting table graphic. Fixed crafting recipes are marked by an exclamation mark. These symbols are not visible in the game.
