Soapbox: Parallel Play is the new Couch Co-Op, and Minecraft is Perfect for It.

I don't know if I would consider PvE to be a form of parallel play. If we stick to the traditional definition of "parallel play," I wouldn't even think of Minecraft as a type of it unless you are never interacting with anyone. When you interact with someoneelse, your play turns into group/cooperative. Parallel play can be seen as a means to progress to cooperative play later on, in line with what Kate Gray said. Children are still developing beyond their self-centered natures.



I'm splitting hairs at this point, but I think it's possible to think of "playing in parallel" and "parallel playing" as two distinct concepts. The latter is any activity in which you all have the same goal or set of rules (i.e. Minecraft) and will occasionally interact when your actions align with one another's. Minecraftservers The latter, conversely, is engaged in the same activity but separate from each other with little to no interaction.



In the main the concept of parallel play in video games could mean two players playing Minecraft on the same server without ever interfacing with each other (but still seeing the creations of each other). A friend and you could play different video games together.
