Avanos Medical (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) has announced that it is recalling Cortrak*2's Enteral access system. The recall was initiated because of injuries to patients and death from misplaced nasoenteric/nasogastric tubes. The recall covers 629 devices sold within the United States.

If a tube is inserted improperly, patients could experience damage to their vocal cords, lungs, or the trachea. Avanos Medical's recall notification states that since 2015, there has been 60 deaths and 23 injuries resulting from incorrect placement of nasogastric feed tubes using the CORTRAK*2 enteral access system. Pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and pneumothorax. Perforation (a gap or hole within the lung's wall), pneumonia, and the pleural effusion (excess fluid between the lungsand chest cavity) are some of the injuries.

Avanos is the FDA's second warning regarding insertal feeding tubes. In February the FDA issued a caution to healthcare professionals as well as parents about the possibility of strangulation when children use feeding tubes. Two deaths resulting from strangulation of children took place in 2021 because of tubes that were wrapped around a patient’s neck.
