Ever the kid-friendly outfit, Apple filed a patent in 2008 to make text messaging more secure for the children. TechCrunch reports that, today, the US Patent and Trademark office has granted Apple patents that put an end to sending offensive text messages sometimes called "sexting."
The technology will stop an "administered device" such as an iPhone perhaps? - from sending or receiving harmful messages. Administrators of the device determine the filter's strictness. This could include setting filters based on the grade or age.
In addition to filtering offensive language the technology also includes the ability to require users to communicate in a specific language. For instance, every outbound message could require a certain number of foreign words. This tool can be useful to anyone trying to learn a different language, even children.
Although this patent was filed in 2008, the promises it made have yet to be fulfilled. It is not uncommon for Apple to file patents on technology (hardware or software) with which they are currently working. Sometimes these patents result in exciting new products or features.
The possibility of this technology appearing in iOS 5, or some other Apple product, remains unclear. It's not clear if this technology will be incorporated in iOS 5 or any other Apple product. However, it's likely that people will soon begin looking for ways to communicate with the device in ways that it can't filter.
