Id Software's legendary Doom can be played in a variety of ways including Minecraft, crabs and even in an article we wrote. Age of Empires 2 can be added to the list of games. Modders have developed a complete strategy campaign that is based on Doom which includes the FPS's iconic sound effects and sprites.
"Age of Doom" was designed by modder HellKnight61 (thanks, DSOGaming). It is a completely customized campaign for Age of Empires 2 and revisits the events from the original Doom. It is primarily inspired by Doom 3 with Dr. Betruger orchestrating the escape from Hell by demons. However, characters from later Doom games like Vega do appear.
ModDB has the mod at ModDB. Version 1.0 was released this week. It's missing the final episode, but still features four episodes and a tutorial. HellKnight61 has added many features to make it more like Doom than Age of Empires. These include the ability for the Doom marines to flick switches, use Teleporters, and even sprint.
The Doom guy is equipped with all the classic weapons from Doom including the BFG or Doom 3's Soul Cube. All of the monsters appear, and most have sound effects that are sourced from the games. It's basically Doom as an isometric strategy shooter through an Age of Empires lens, and it's an impressive piece of work.
Both the Doom and Age of Empires franchises are still going strong, despite both having their debuts in the 1990s. Age of Empires 4 will be out next month. It may even get another beta. Doom Eternal, which was released in the year before, is still being enhanced and there could be additional stories about the Doom Slayer.
