Minecraft to Join Microsoft

Mojang will join Microsoft Studios, which also includes the studios behind blockbuster franchises like "Halo," Forza, "Fable," and many more. Microsoft's investments in mobile and cloud technologies will enable "Minecraft" players to benefit from richer and faster worlds, more powerful tools for development, and more opportunities to connect with the "Minecraft" community.



Microsoft will purchase Mojang under the terms of the agreement worth $2.5 billion.

Minecraft has grown from a simple game into a project of monumental significance. While we're extremely happy with the progress Minecraft has become However, it wasn't our goal to make it this massive.



As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder of Mojang. He has decided that he would not want to assume the responsibility of running a business with such global importance. I don't see myself as a true game developer. I make games for fun , and because I love programming and games. But I don’t create games with the intention of making them huge successes. Minecraft is the most mind-blowing game I've ever played. Minecraft servers It's a part sandbox game part world-builder and exploration game as well as a farming simulator and a role-playing game. Although it does have an "conclusion" that you'll have to find on your own, it never ends. You can play by yourself or with other players, and you can even run your own Minecraft server and invite only your friends to play on it. It's not difficult to spend countless hours playing Minecraft, and millions of people already have.

It's pretty obvious to me. Microsoft have decided that if Apple adopts hi-res technology with their retina screens and operating system the only way Microsoft can distinguish itself is to "bet the whole company on red" and go lo-lo-res.

Minecraft is the biggest thing that happened to games since Pokemon. Everyone plays the game, and If Minecraft is managed well, it can remain one of the most popular, widely played, influential franchises for at least another decade.



Microsoft considers games extremely important, both because they're a key driver for the new Windows PCs and Windows licenses, and because of the Xbox. Microsoft has tried to create games that resembled Minecraft in the past (Viva Pinata, Kodu, Project Spark) but they've generally failed.



Sony already owns the Little Pig Planet franchise, and Nintendo is beginning to enter the "creative games where you make stuff, rather than just consuming stuff" field with Mario Maker for the Wii U. I think a lot of companies assume that these types of games will become more important. They're also right, I think.
