The FDA has confirmed the recall by Avanos Medical of Cortrak*2 enteral access system. https://controlc.com/a43c66b1 Since March 21st in 2016, 629 of the devices were recalls in the U.S.
Cortrak*2 is a tool that allows doctors to insert medical feeding tubes in patients' stomachs or small bowels.
The system's recall was due to the deaths and injuries of patients resulting from the incorrect placement of nasocentric/nasogastric tubes. These tubes are used to aid in placing them. Nasogastric, also known as nasoenteric, tube that isn't properly inserted can cause damage to the vocal chords and trachea. Avanos Medical feeding tube This can lead to serious injury, or even death.
According to Avanos the safety announcement the company has reported 53 deaths and 60 injuries related to this issue. Avanos Medical Numerous adverse events were identified such as respiratory failure, pneumonia, and pneumothorax.
This recall is utilized to modify Cortrak*2's guidelines on use, intended use and to instruct users to verify tube placement according to institutional protocols before using the tube in order to provide nutrients.
