Avanos Medical (U.S. Avanos Medical feeding tube Food & Drug Administration) has announced it will recall Cortrak*2's enteral access system. The recall was announced because of injuries to patients and deaths resulting from the misplacement of nasoenteric/n tubes. The recall includes 629 devices in use throughout the United States.
Avanos is promoting the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System due to its ability to view the stomach of a patient and their small bowel. This allows for the installation of an medical feed tube. Patients could suffer damage to their vocal cords, lungs, or the trachea, if a tube is not properly placed. Avanos Medical Avanos Medical's recall notification states that as of 2015, there has been 60 deaths and 23 injuries due to misplacement nasogastric feed tubes when using the CORTRAK*2 entry access system. Avanos Medical feeding tube Pulmonary failure, pneumothorax (collapsed lung tissue) perforation (a hole in one's esophagus or bowel wall) pneumonia, excess fluid between the lungs (the chest cavity as well as the lungs) are all among the incidents.

Avanos is the second alert issued by the FDA has issued about intra-oral feeding tubes. In February, the FDA issued a cautionary note to parents and healthcare professionals regarding the risk of strangulation when children are fed through feeding tubes. Two instances were reported of strangulation among children who received a feeding tube that was wrapped around their necks.
