Avanos Medical has recalled the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System because of injuries and deaths caused by incorrect placement of the nasoenteric tube. The recall affects 629 devices in use throughout the United States.

According to the Avanos Medical recall communication there were 60 injuries and 23 deaths in patients in the last year due to improper placement of feeding tubes for the nasogastric system making use of the CORTRAK* 2 Enteral Access System. Avanos Medical Pneumothorax, pulmonary failure (collapsed lung tissue), perforation, (a hole in the esophagus or bowel wall), pneumonia, and excessive fluid in the lung and chest cavity (the chest cavity as well as the lung tissue) are all among the traumas.

Avanos is the second alert that the FDA has issued regarding feeding tubes that are intra-oral.
