Avanos Medical has recalled the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System in response to the risk of injuries and deaths resulting from misplacement of nasoenteric and nasogastric tube. The recall affects 629 devices which were distributed in the United States.
Avanos markets its Cortrak*2 enteral access system that allows its visualisation of the patient's small bowel as well as stomach, which helps in placing a medical feeding tube. Avanos Mediacal Cortrak 2 Patients could suffer damage to their vocal cords, lungs, or trachea if a tube is not properly placed. Avanos Medical released a recall announcement stating that there have been sixty incidents and 23 deaths caused by misplacement, in 2015, because of the CORTRAK*2 Entry Access System. The causes of the injuries are pneumothorax, respiratory failure and perforation. Avanos Medical feeding tube These are all types of lung collapse.
Avanos Medical outlined a plan which would permit patients to have updated labeling so they can verify the location of nasogastric and other tubes before they are employed
The Avanos warning is the second caution the FDA issued in 2022 about tube feeding through the stomach. Avanos Mediacal Cortrak 2 The FDA sent out a message to parents and healthcare providers about strangulation risk when feeding tubes are being used by children. Two instances were reported of strangulation among children who received a feeding tube tied around their necks.
