Minecraft-makers Cancel Film Inspired By Game

Minecraft-makers cancel film inspired by game

Minecraft-maker Mojang has intervened to stop the creation of a film set in the game's block-built world.

Birth of a Man's creators had launched an Kickstarter appeal for $600,000. (PS366,000) in order to fund production.

It was canceled by its creator just a few days after it was launched.

Mojang founder Markuss Persson later posted a message on Twitter to explain why it was shut down.

"We don't allow [half-a-million-dollar Kickstarter projects] based on our [intellectual property] without any deals in place," wrote Mr Persson, also known as Notch, in a tweet.

The message is believed to refer to the fact that there was no licensing agreement negotiated between Mojang and the film makers to use blocks, items and other elements that are similar to those used in the game. The film was set to be released on YouTube in 2014

A teaser trailer on the Kickstarter project page showed concept footage mixing live action with scenes, creatures and weapons seen in the game.

Brandon Laatsch, the director of the short film stated that he had been working on the idea of making the idea of a Minecraft film for more than 12 years.

He also said that he and the other gamers who were part of the project hoped that the final film would be better than those based on popular video games.

"Minecraft is the perfect video game to adapt to the film," he said in the teaser video.

"The reason is that it doesn't have a character, it does not have a story I find this to be an enormous advantage since we can come up with our own story."

Mr Laatsch has not yet provided a comment on the reason for the project's cancellation or whether it will be revived once Mojang has negotiated to license its intellectual property.
