Minecraft Developer Mojang won't Allow NFTs And Blockchain Tech

The company posted an article on its blog entitled "Minecraft and NFTs" and acknowledged that some companies and creators have begun to launch NFT projects that use Minecraft world files and skin packs. The post suggested that Minecraft creators might use the game to create and market collectible NFTs. These NFTs could be earned through the activities on the Minecraft server, or as an incentive for their work in the real world.

"To ensure that Minecraft players enjoy an enjoyable and safe experience, blockchain technologies are not permitted to be integrated inside our Minecraft server and client applications, nor can they be utilized to create NFTs for any game-related content, such as skins, worlds, items, or other mods," Mojang wrote in the post.

"We will be watching closely how blockchain technology evolves over time to ensure these principles are not violated and to determine if it can provide safer gaming experiences and other practical and inclusive gaming applications," the company stated. "However, we have no plans of implementing blockchain technology into Minecraft at the moment."

The traditional game industry has begun to disengage itself from NFTs in recent months, following a backlash from gamers and a market that is crashing. Sony last week said it would launch the digital collectibles feature as part a new PlayStation rewards program, but stated clearly that its collectibles were "definitely not NFTs." Ubisoft, the first major game publisher to test NFTs in the fall of last year it ended its experiment after only four months. Valve the Steam marketplace's owner, said in October that it would not permit any games that use blockchain technology or NFT. However, Epic Games, Fortnite creator, recently opened the access to these games through its gaming store for PC.

Microsoft has yet to issue an opinion on the topic in relation to its gaming properties. But Xbox chief and Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer stated to Protocol last year he was "leery" of the "near-term type of hysteria about NFTs" and the potential for fraud, scams and the pyramid scheme character of the crypto market, which could lead to consumers losing huge amounts of real money very quickly. Spencer told Axios in the fall of 2017 that NFTs could be exploitative and that there were "a many things that are likely not to be sold in your store."

Mojang's blog post expresses similar views. The company said that each of these uses of NFTs or other blockchain technologies creates digital owner based on scarcity and exclusion, which isn't in accordance with Minecraft values of inclusiveness and creativity. "NFTs do not encompass all members of our community, and create a situation of haves and nots.
