Key Responsibilities and Expectations of NPO Experts
A group of NPO experts convened in The Hague and Vienna in January 2018 to share progress and identify challenges in their countries. The group represented 29 countries, and engaged in discussions with the FATF Secretariat and select government representatives. Its members discussed the role of NPOs in achieving their country's national goals for improving financial sector transparency. This article discusses some of the key responsibilities and expectations of NPO experts, and how they can contribute to the development of financial sector transparency worldwide.

NCI metathesaurus

The NCI Metathesaurus for NPO experts is a comprehensive biomedical terminology database, based on the UMLS Metathesaurus of the National Library of Medicine (NLM). It contains over eight million terms and over three million biomedical concepts, with preferred terms and synonyms highlighted, and links to related information sources. The NCI Metathesaurus is constantly updated by biomedical terminology experts.

A fully annotated synonym property for concepts is required in order to export the content to an external data file. This file is then processed and inserted into a MEME environment for NCI metathesaurus. In addition to checking for synonyms and concepts, NCIt checks for roles and properties. Any concept that does not meet these requirements is reported and fixed. The metadata used to build the NCI Metathesaurus includes both semantic types and PT/NCI terms.

A review of NCIt concluded that it was mostly compliant with the review criteria, but that it was difficult to validate due to its large size. The editors recommended better documentation of editorial policies and a user guide for NCIt. The NCIt editor team is currently working on implementing a user guide for the NCI BioPortal. Editors generally applied the documentation guidelines but did not always follow them consistently.

NPO ontology

The NPO ontology is a tool for communicating measured neuronal phenotypes. Its community ontology is open source, and its core ontology data model can be reused. NanoParticle Ontology (NPO) was developed to represent the basic knowledge of nanotechnology in cancer research. Nanotechnology is being used in a variety of fields including cancer diagnosis and therapy. The ontology is currently in a state of development, and the National Publications Office and National Center for Biomedical Ontology are developing mechanisms for its governance, review, and editorial processes. These mechanisms will allow the NPO to continue to grow and meet the needs of the research community.

The highest-paid NPO expert earns $78,245 per year, while the lowest-paid NPO expert makes $28,490 per year. According to these figures, an individual Npo expert could expect to earn a salary of $79,608 per year. This means that each paycheck would equal about $3317.
