Avanos Medical is recalling Cortrak*2 Entry Access System. The FDA declares that patients have been injured and killed by nasogastric or the nasoenteric tube being misplaced. The recall affects 629 devices in use throughout the United States.
Avanos has launched the Cortrak*2 Enteral Access System due to its screen-based visualization of a patient's stomach or small bowel, to aid in the correct placement of a medical feeding tube. Avanos Medical However, patients could suffer from damage to their vocal cords as well as lungs if the tube is not properly placed. Avanos Medical has reported that there have been more than 60 injuries and 23 deaths caused by misplacement of nasogastric feeding tubes using the CORTRAK*2 Ental Access System. Pneumothorax, pulmonary failure (collapsed lungs), perforation, (a hole in one's esophagus or bowel wall) as well as pneumonia and an excess of fluid that is accumulating between the lungs (the chest cavity and lung tissue) are all among the traumas.
Avanos Medical has presented a plan to offer users updated labeling, in order to ensure the proper positioning of nasogastric (and nasoenteric) tubes prior to their use.
