Update - September 28, 2021: Valve has responded to reports that Steam could be removing the option to download older versions of games.
September 28 - Valve has shared an official statement with PCGamer that explains the studio doesn't have plans to remove the option to download older game versions. My world my life A Valve spokesperson told PCGamer that they're not going to stop players from downloading older builds. "What we are currently developing is an approach to handling edge cases involving unowned materials, and helping partners remove builds that need to go. When it's ready for release, we'll be sharing more details about this work." Original story follows.
The most recent Steam beta includes a feature that seemingly removes the option for users to roll back game updates or play older versions of games on Steam. Users can no longer download Steam games through their Steam accounts to play games with older updates. Many are dissatisfied with this new feature.
There are a variety of games that change radically between updates - there's an entire fan group dedicated to locating and archiving all the different versions of Minecraft over time for instance, and the likes of Counter-Strike update regularly , with significant changes.
It is possible to download older versions of Steam games with SteamDB. All you need to do is locate the version you wish to play. The September 23 beta update to Steam seems to have stopped this practice. The update will go live in Steam's client and no one will be able to play the older versions.
This was spotted by SteamDB creator Pavel Djundik, who confirms that it would now be impossible to download earlier game depots of Steam games and play them with this new code in place at least if Steam implements it for all games. Pavel declares that SteamDB will need to "go back to the past to only track files it owns" if this is done. SteamDB includes Pavel's complete, in-depth explanation.
The last Steam beta brought a significant modification to downloads for games.
With this change, it is no longer possible to download older game versions, because client asks for a code (GetManifestRequestCode) that rotates every five minutes.

Many Steam tinkerers are not happy with this change and would like it to be reversed. Valve will decide if it will be before the live release.
