A Minecraft modder has introduced new gameplay issues for players to tackle in the form of climate change. Nick Porillo's GlobalWarming mod alters the atmosphere in response to certain actions such as melting ores. As climate change becomes more widespread, temperatures will rise. This will lead to more carbon emissions, which could cause intense storms, forest fires and a decrease in snowfall.
You can fight the changes in the atmosphere by planting trees to absorb carbon dioxide. To tackle the issue on a bigger scale you can buy carbon offsets, which give other players a tree-planting bounty to complete -- that is in line with one of the mod's concepts of working together to fight climate change.
"If the majority of players do not agree to play near-carbon-neutrally in the way they play, then the carbon score will increase in-game. Porillo explained to Motherboard that players will begin paying back the debt they've incurred once the damage has been done. "The idea is that players should put in a bit more effort in the beginning to not emit lots of smoke, and they can avoid paying the ultimate price."
He plans to add more features, such as scorecards that let you know who the most carbon-neutral players are, figuring your carbon footprint and adding methane as a second greenhouse gas.
