Tim Sweeney, founder and CEO of Epic Games, says that the Epic Games store "definitely won't" restrict the sale of games that include NFTs. Sweeney's comment follows a statement from Minecraft developer Mojang which laid out the company's stance to not permit blockchain technologies or NFTs to be used in Minecraft.
Following Mojang's declaration, one fan reached out to Sweeney on Twitter to enquire whether Epic Games would take a similar stance. Sweeney replied in a negative manner.
"Developers should be free to decide how to build their games, and you're free to choose whether or not to play them," he says. "I believe that operating system and stores manufacturers shouldn't be trying to force their views on other people. We shouldn't.
Another user reacted to Sweeney's post, asking how this differs from the Epic Games policy that prohibits the use of hateful and discriminatory content. Sweeney said that this was due to "editorial and branding judgments" and believes that Epic has chosen "to draw the line at the accepted norms."
A few users of the PC gaming subreddit have criticized Sweeney's position. This is despite the fact that Epic CEO John McDonnell has spoken out against NFTs in the past. In September 2021, Sweeney publicly posted a copy of his email response in a tweet reply, which reads "We aren't touching NFTs as the whole field is currently caught up in a complex mix of scams, interesting foundations for decentralised technology, and frauds."
Sweeney now says that he believes that Epic Game store developers should be able to pursue these integrations, but it is clear. In a tweet that followed, Sweeney said that cryptography is a complex field.
