Avanos Medical recalls the Cortrak*2 enteral access system
Avanos Medical, a U.S. Avanos Medical Food and Drug Administration (FDA) company recalls Cortrak*2 enteral access system because of a misplaced nasoenteric tube or nasogastric tubs that could have resulted in injuries or even patient deaths. The recall affects 629 devices currently distributed across the United States.

Cortrak 2 eternal access system Avanos Medical recalls that there were sixty injuries, 23 deaths and 23 illnesses resulting from the misplacement or inadvertent insertion of nasogastric feeding tube while using the CORTRAK*2 Enteral Access System. Injuries have included respiratory failure, pneumothorax (collapsed lung), perforation (a hole in the wall of the lung, esophagus or bowel) as well as pneumonia and the pleural effusion (excess fluid between the chest cavity and the lungs).

Avanos Medical outlined a plan which would permit patients to get updated labels so they can confirm the placement of nasogastric, nasoenteric , and other tubes prior to when they are utilized

Avanos was the second warning issued by the FDA in 2022 concerning the use of enteral nutrition tubes. In February, the FDA issued a cautionary note to parents and healthcare professionals about the risk of strangulation when children are fed by feeding tubes. Two cases were reported of strangulation among children who were fed through a tube wrapped around their necks.
