Avanos Medical, a U.S. Avanos Medical Food and Drug Administration (FDA) company is recalling Cortrak*2 the enteral access system due to misplacement nasoenteric tubes or nasogastric tubs which could have caused injuries and even deaths of patients. The recall currently covers 629 devices which were sold throughout the United States.
Avanos is promoting the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System because of its ability to see the stomach of a patient and their small bowel. Avanos Mediacal Cortrak 2 This permits the installation of a medical feed tube. Avanos Medical feeding tube Patients are at risk of damage to their vocal cords, lungs or trachea if a tube is incorrectly inserted. According to Avanos Medical's recall communication it has been reported that there have been 60 incidents of injury and 23 deaths in patients in the last year due to improper placement of feeding tubes for nasogastric patients using the CORTRAK* 2 Enteral Access System. The injuries have included respiratory failure, pneumothorax (collapsed lung) as well as perforation (a hole in the lung's wall, esophagus or bowel) as well as pneumonia. pleural effusion (excess fluid between the chest cavity and the lungs).
Avanos Medical described a plan for users to get updated labels to ensure proper positioning of the nasogastric tubes and nasoenteric tubes prior to use.
Avanos Medical Avanos is the second alert that the FDA has issued about intra-oral feeding tubes. Avanos Medical The FDA cautioned parents and healthcare professionals about the risk of strangulation among children who feed tubes. Two cases of strangulation by a child were reported in 2021. It was caused by a tubing system wrapped around the neck of one of the patients.
