Avanos Medical is recalling Cortrak*2 Entry Access System. The FDA states that patients have suffered injuries and even killed by nasogastric and an nasoenteric tube that was misplaced. The recall affects 629 devices currently distributed across the United States.
Avanos is promoting the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System because of its ability to see the stomach of a patient and their small bowel. This allows the placement of a medical feed tube. Avanos Medical feeding tube Patients may experience injuries to their vocal chords or trachea if the tube is placed in a wrong way. Avanos Medical has reported that there have been more than more than 23 deaths and 60 injuries related to misplacement in the nasogastric feeding tubes with CORTRAK*2's Ental Access System. Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos Medical feeding tube These injuries include respiratory failure pneumothorax (collapsed lung) and perforation (a hole in the wall of the lung, esophagus or the bowel) as well as pneumonia and pleural effusion (excess fluid between the lungs and chest cavity).
Avanos Medical feeding tube Avanos Medical has presented a plan to update users' labels, to ensure the proper placement of Nasogastric (and nasal) tubes prior to using them.
Avanos is the FDA's second caution about insertal feeding tubes. In February, the FDA issued a cautionary note to parents and healthcare professionals about the possibility of strangulation if children are fed via feeding tubes. Two deaths due to strangulation in children occurred in 2021 due to a tube that was wrapped around a patient’s neck.
