PODGORICA (AP) - Montenegro’s security agency warned of a coordinated Russian cyberattack on the nation's government.
The Agency for National Security, or ANB has stated that Montenegro is "under an unipolar war at the moment."
The Adriatic Sea state, once considered to be a strong Russian ally, has since joined NATO despite fierce opposition from Moscow. It has also joined Western sanctions against Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
Russia has added Montenegro along with a majority of European countries to its "enemy state" list in order to thwart Kremlin interests.
The Montenegrin government announced earlier this week that it was the first victimized by a series of cyberattacks that targeted its servers. However it claimed it was able stop any further damage. The attack appears to be ongoing.
The ANB said that coordinated Russian services were behind the cyberattack. "This kind of attack was conducted in Montenegro for the first time and was planned for a long time."

Dusan Polovic, a government official said, "I can confirm that the terror attack Montenegro is suffering these days comes directly out of Russia."
The U.S. embassy in Montenegro warned its citizens living in the Balkan state to be aware of an "persistent and ongoing cyberattack that is currently in process."
"The attack could cause disruptions to the public utility transportation (including airports and border crossings) and telecommunications sectors," it said.
