Coronavirus: Leicester church uses Minecraft to teach Bible to teens
17 May 2020
A church has turned to Minecraft to teach its youngsters about Christianity during the lockdown.
The server was used to recreate Leicester's St John the Baptist Church so that the youth club will have a space to hold Bible lessons.
Josh Young, the organiser, said it was a way to meet younger people "where they are" and engaging them in a context they are used to.
They can also make use of virtual reality to create their own lessons.
Mr Young, for example made an underwater whale to teach the kids about Jonah's story. He also urged the teens to build boats to discover more about Jesus"calming a storm.
I'm bonnie and you are
The 27-year-old youth worker added, "Having a community of young people is very important and that's why I wanted to continue during the lockdown."
"They aren't able to hang out with friends and some are really struggling right now. They can chat, play and interact with each other on Minecraft without ever physically being there. It's a way to interact and create a community.
"Young people are online" and the Bible teaches us to meet people wherever they are in their community.
"Jesus set the bar for what people believed to be normal worship, and he'd be pleased that the church is making progress."
Every Wednesday, about 20 children between 11 and 17 spend two-and-a half hours on the server.
They are free to explore the world and pursue their own projects during that time However, for a period of 30 seconds, they are transported to the communal space to complete an task that is based on the Bible.
Mr Young stated that they had made sure that adults could manage the children's involvement and stop any inappropriate language.
Rosie 15, 15, is one of the teenagers who attend regularly. "I enjoy it because I get to talk to my friends while playing, I enjoy it as much as going to our regular youth club," she said.
"I thought it was good that Josh transported everyone to the same place and we had a competition to build the best boat from Matthew Chapter 8 when Jesus stopped the storm. My team won because we built lightning storm clouds."
