Epic Games founder and CEO Tim Sweeney says that Epic Games will not limit the distribution or sale of games featuring NFTs. Sweeney's comment follows an announcement by Minecraft developer Mojang that outlined its stance not to allow blockchain technology or NFTs in Minecraft.
Following Mojang's announcement, one fan contacted Sweeney on Twitter to inquire about whether Epic Games would take a similar stance. Sweeney replied in a negative manner.
He states that developers should be able to decide what games they want to create and you can decide whether or not you want to play them. "I believe that operating system and store manufacturers shouldn't attempt to dictate their opinions on other people. We will not."
Sweeney's remarks were addressed by a different user who wanted to know what is the difference between this and Epic Games its policy against content that is discriminatory and obscene. Sweeney said that this difference comes down to "editorial and brand judgments," and believes that Epic decides "to draw the line at mainstream acceptable norms."
Some users on the PC gaming subreddit have expressed displeasure with Sweeney's stance, highlighting how the Epic CEO has previously spoken out against NFTs. MINECRAFT GAMES Sweeney shared a public copy of a September 2021 email response to a tweet reply. The message stated that "We aren't tackling NFTs since the whole field is currently caught in a complex mix of scams and interesting decentralised tech foundations as well as scams."
Sweeney now says that he believes Epic Game store developers should be able to pursue such integrations, however it is clear. In a tweet that followed, Sweeney explained that Cryptography is a complex field.
