Minecraft Player Spends two Years Creating A Virtual City

Minecraft player invests two years building virtual city by Zoe Kleinman Technology reporter, BBC News

17 October 2014

A student from Delaware has spent two years building the virtual world he named Titan City in the video game Minecraft.

Titan City is made up of 4.5 Million Minecraft building blocks and has 96 buildings.

Duncan Parcells says it has taken the two years he spent to construct, averaging up to five hours per week on the project.

His first building was a virtual replica of the World Trade Center, which took 18 months to finish.

However the 19-year-old says Titan City is not a real-life model of New York.

He said to the BBC, "It's inspired New York."

"A lot of people believe that it's a pastime but it's not."

He built the city with the Xbox 360 version of Minecraft but has now transferred the city to the PC version, which is, he claims, provides more construction options.

Mr Parcells plans to add an airport and the construction of a sports stadium.

"I think it's a way to provide a outlet for architecture and energy," he said.

"I've always been a fan of architecture. I'm particularly proud of the more traditional buildings, and the more art deco, Victorian-style builds.

"A lot of people walk by and want to walk around and explore or help in the construction. Many of them assist in helping create roads.

Although Titan City has been welcomed by all who have visited it The entrepreneur Parcells said that he has kept his virtual world apart from his real life.

"I've kept it under wraps, it's kind of like a second life I'm not talking about, but people are beginning to inquire," he said.

"My parents think it's cool. I'm guessing they're happy that I don't do it all the time."

Microsoft recently agreed to purchase Minecraft studio Mojang in a deal worth $2.5bn (PS1.5bn).

The game registered its 100 millionth player in February 2014, its creator Markus Persson, aka Notch, announced on Twitter.

After an initial purchase of the game Minecraft is completely free to play, however there are in-game purchases available.

The game takes place in a virtual universe comprised of cubes made from various materials. Almost all of these can be used as building blocks, and a few of them can be refined into usable raw materials (wood, iron, diamond etc).

The game is played by using blocks to construct a shelter and turning raw materials and their combinations into items (swords, armour, bows) to help kill the game's numerous creatures.
