"Oh, that's an Idea": U.S. Parents Respond to China Screen Time Ban

China's regulator claimed the new rules were a response concern that games can affect the mental and physical health of children, a worry that was echoed by parents and experts in the United States.



Article content Paul Morgan, a father of two teens and a Penn State professor who studies the use of electronic devices, finds problems with the ban while acknowledging the challenges of regulating children's screen time. "These electronic devices are ubiquitous," Morgan said. "It's extremely difficult to keep kids away."



Morgan says that screen time can have negative connotations, particularly for heavy users. This could be due to the fact that it may substitute for exercise or sleep. Social media usage isn't prohibited by the ban, which is especially harmful for girls. Certain groups, such as students with disabilities, may benefit from the social interactions provided by video games.



Shira Weiss is a publicist from New Jersey who works with technology clients, including a videogame company. She sees value in games that keep her twins in touch with their peers. But, she'd like to limit the time they play violent games.



Article content "I believe the Chinese rules are good," Weiss said. "You're still saying , 'Play video games,' but you're setting limits." She added, jokingly: "Can they come here and impose that rule on my home?"



Michael Gural-Maiello, who works in business development at an engineering company and has an 11-year-old son, believes that parents should be the ones who regulate their children's use of video games.



Gural-Maiello stated that governments don't have the authority to tell parents what they should do with their time. "China has a rotten record in the field of technology generally.
