First Semester of the Msc. Games Technology in Game Programming we were given the final assignment to develop an application using the Simple Render Engine (SRE). Our group decided to make a basic Minecraft-clone, with the main interesting of creating a correct Voxel data structure, as well as chunk management.
The final result is a simple game that uses the same gameplay as Minecraft It allows you to mine blocks and place them. MINECRAFT SERVERS We added some additional features like flying and added a few details for particle systems along with textures. The most important aspect is that we managed to achieve a stable 60FPS gameplay with 262,144 voxels in the game.
The main challenge was of course the optimisation process, mesh generation, and getting the data structure correct. But the majority of our lectures was also focused on 2D along with SRE being target towards 2D and 3D, so creating a game in 3D graphics naturally added complexity. The majority of the engine also supports Box2D for Physics. In our case, we used Bullet Physics which also added an extra layer of complexity due to none of us having any experience using the tool, and there was no lecture that was based on the library.
