Purdue Inside Minecraft

Purdue inside Minecraft

Any Boilermaker alumni could say that Purdue's campus is characterized by its gorgeous brick buildings famous fountains, iconic fountains and bell towers. Now there's a Purdue student is creating his own Purdue campus for the gamers in the world of Minecraft and Minecraft, making this the no. 10 Best Public Universities in the U.S.

Purdue Computer Science senior, Esteban Vicente-Paulino Richey, has constructed Purdue's campus within of the game Minecraft. Richey started his passion project in the year 2019 and finished it 300 hours later, he had 3 million blocks erected. Richey now has 52 percent of the campus constructed within Minecraft. Andrew Klotz, who built 30 percent of the project, has helped Richey finish many campus buildings north. The buildings that have been completed include the Wilmeth Active Learning Center, the Class of 1950 Lecture Hall, Elliott Hall of Music and campus residence halls, Ross-Ade Stadium and even Purdue Mall, complete with the Class of 1939 Water Sculpture.

Minecraft was first released to the general public in 2011. Minecraft is a "sandbox" game, meaning there aren't any goals or objectives. This lets the player be free of limitations. The world of Minecraft is comprised of various cubes of materials called blocks which players can arrange and arrange them to create scenes and structures. With over 200 million copies sold and 126 million monthly active users as of 2020, Minecraft is known as the best-selling video game ever.

Richey's love of Minecraft began when he was in middle school in Carmel, Indiana, and the game first came out. His family had an old computer that was unable to play the game at the time, but he could watch others play on YouTube. In 2013, his family got a new computer that could run Minecraft, and he has been playing since.

"I feel like Minecraft is now a"generational" type of game, and that players of the college age have played or grew up playing this game. It's a sport that a majority of people can participate in easily, and be creative and work with others," Richey says.

In the autumn of 2018, Richey started at Purdue as a freshman in the computer science program. Because he enjoyed taking advanced computer science classes at his high school, Richey knew he wanted computer science at Purdue.

He says, "I had never been to Purdue before my first semester. But in the fall, as I began to get used to the campus and my classes," he said. As a freshman He joined the Launch Campus Ministry and would spend time at its clubhouse on Waldron Street. This is when he came up with the idea of building that house in Minecraft.

"Because that was the first building I spent a lot of time in, I designed it with great attention to detail in Minecraft. All of my friends really loved it. premium content for premium people After I had created it, I thought, "Why not make the front yard first, then the backyard, then the buildings that are across from it?" Richey says that this is the way Richey continued building and expanding on the concepts he had come up with. "I also made use of Purdue’s virtual tour maps and topographical maps to help me to design and construct the campus in the game. It is designed to be easily identifiable as a whole.

The most difficult aspect of building campus has been new structures and buildings as Purdue continues to expand. "It's difficult to keep up with the constant changes happening around campus. If (Purdue President) Mitch Daniels could let me know when new buildings are going up or being renovated prior to when they are due it would be wonderful," Richey says as he laughs.

Richey, a rising senior, is planning to make his big leap into the world of computer science as a student in May. He'll also remain at RSA Security, where he is currently interning. He also plans to continue to build Purdue University in Minecraft.

"I love how campus looks and I am awed by the people who reside there. I also love the fact that I have many wonderful memories from all the buildings I've built here. It's a lot of fun and inspires me to continue. Richey said that although I was apprehensive about having to stop once graduation, it's possible that I'll continue building West Lafayette.
