The Importance of Service in a Digital Society
Service is often the boundary between success and failure. In the digital world, service is an essential driver of Digitalization. NPO experts have the expertise to identify the main needs of their interlocutors and address them through strategy and business support. This article explores the importance of service in a modern society and explains how it is an essential driver of Digitalization. Here are some examples of ways in which service can help organizations succeed. Identifying the key needs of interlocutors and tailoring services for those needs will ensure that you achieve sustainable success and maintain your brand image.

C&SN's efforts to support the civil society sector

The C&SN was founded in 2009 with funding from the Open Society Foundation and the support of OMB Watch. The network has since been a resource for nonprofit organizations and the public on counterterrorism and humanitarian law, and has worked to advocate for changes to national security and counterterrorism laws. C&SN's recent report on counterterrorism gathered testimony from the nonprofit sector and civil society leaders from around the world. The report focuses on nonprofits' role in strengthening the security environment in the United States.

After completing the report, C&SN staff and the NGOs it represents have been active on Capitol Hill. This includes briefings and articles highlighting their work, and engaging in dialogue with Treasury officials. The results of these efforts were a joint statement by Sen. Patrick Leahy and the Attorney General, who called on the State Department and the Treasury to provide clear guidance on these issues.

NPO experts' comments to FATF

FATF's Plenary meeting on non-profit organisations (NPOs) focused on the impact of voluntary tax compliance programmes. The Plenary also adopted follow-up reports to its mutual evaluations. In the context of counter-terrorism, the FATF's recommendations for NPOs are intended to protect the sector from misuse by terrorists. They also recommend that countries identify NPOs that are exploited by terrorists or actively support their activities.

The authors of the paper argue that while FATF recognizes the efforts of NPOs to provide charitable services around the world, they must safeguard the sector's integrity and reputation. Hence, they have fully revised and updated their paper in June 2013, incorporating the findings of a typologies report focused on the risk of terrorist abuse in non-profit organisations. In addition, the authors of the paper acknowledge that the sector's efforts have a positive impact on society.

C&SN workshop on plastics and water

The findings of the recent C&SN workshop on plastics and water in the North Pacific illustrate the growing importance of understanding plastics in our ecosystems. The NPCG, or North Pacific central gyre, is a major area of plastic accumulation in the world's oceans. Its microplastic content has increased by two orders of magnitude over the past four decades. In addition, the North Pacific subtropical gyre is widespread and spatially variable, but has lower microplastic concentrations.

While benthic marine debris is beneficial to local biodiversity, its eventual end-of-life means permanent interment in the ocean's sediment cover. In Oshima's 2000 report, white plastic shopping bags float in the ocean. This evidence raises concerns about how marine debris may contribute to alien species' survival. It is important to recognize that ocean plastic debris may be a source of these harmful contaminants.
