Microsoft Reveals 'Minecraft is home to an Astonishing 112 million Monthly Players

It's been pretty clear to anyone who has been paying attention that Minecraft has seen an increase in popularity recently, but now we actually can quantify it to some extent.

Microsoft told Business Insider this week that Minecraft has increased to 112 million monthly users which is a 20 million increase from the figures for October. It's 10 years old and still relevant.

Other than "it's good and people like it" there are any number of reasons for the current explosion of Minecraft. The latest update came out around the ten year anniversary that added a lot of new content. PewDiePie, a 100 million-subscriber YouTuber, is credited with bringing the game back to the "influencer" scene. His channel was dedicated to Minecraft for the last few months. Then there's the slow loss of Fortnite as players transition out of the game's cult success and into other games, Minecraft among them.

The growth of Minecraft is even more when you consider that it is not free on most platforms like Fortnite. Although some may attribute Microsoft for including it in the Xbox Game Pass to increase its player base, others may not.

Fortnite appears to be aware that Minecraft is attracting players. This is why we've seen the birth and dedication to building Creative Mode in the game. However, Minecraft remains the original game, and it should continue to capitalize on its popularity in the future with releases such as Minecraft Dungeons, which blends the original with Diablo-like dungeons, looting and dungeons.

The 2021 release date of 'Demon Slayer Season 2 is now set

Netflix's "Squid Game" Season 2 Isn't a Sure Thing Director says

Despite the outrage of fans, "Genshin Impact" still refuses to increase anniversary rewards

The most common comment I hear from Minecraft players is that it's a game people love to return to after some time. In this instance it was an effect of snowballs where numerous players returned to the game together that it was as if old friends could join the game at the same time and have as much fun now like they did a few years ago.

Although it was odd at the time, Microsoft's acquisition of Minecraft for $2.5 billion was a smart decision. They now have one of the most played games on the planet. I'm willing to wager that 112 million monthly players is more than Fortnite currently has, and possibly only is competing with mobile titles at that scale. It's truly amazing.

Expect Minecraft to last for the rest of time. It will be relevant in future releases like Minecraft Dungeons, Minecraft Earth and the AR play which will focus on Pokemon GO in the next.
