How do I spawn?

Lush Caves was the initial cave biome which Axolotls were supposed to breed in. But , since the new biomes aren't arriving in Minecraft until later this year, where can we find these fun fish?

Axolotls are currently spawning in any underground source of water provided it is completely dark and below sea level (y63). This guide will be updated in the latest update 1.18 biomes to reflect any future changes in the spawning. But this is the way you can still locate axolotls.

Axolotls can't be controlled legally, but they're not hostile towards players and can be sucked into a bucket easily. You can then bring them along with you, or return them in the pond or lake close to your base.



If you don't have one, you can attach an axeolotl to a lead. However it will be destroyed in the event that the water level is higher than five minutes.



How to breed



How do you breed axolotls in Minecraft



Axolotls can be breeding by using buckets of tropical fish. Once you have two adult axolotls feed them both with the tropical fish. You should see red hearts signalling that they've entered 'love mode'. What a sweet gesture.



The baby axolotl will take on the colour of one of its parents at random and will take 20 game minutes to reach maturity. You can speed up this process by using more tropical fish.

The blue axolotl which is one of the rarest colors, has a 0.083 percent chance of spawning either naturally or through the breeding of adult axolotls to other colors. If you've got your eyes set on the blue axolotl it is necessary to have a lot of patience and more than a bit of luck.



What do they eat



What is the diet of axolotls?



Axolotls consume tropical fish, which are typically found in ocean biomes. A bucket of tropical fish is better than a single catch to feed an axolotl.



Since tropical fish tend to get scared easily, they can be quite difficult to catch in a bucket, and therefore patience is the key. It's worth checking with Wandering Trader to determine if they have an aquarium of tropical fish for auction.



Combat



Are axolotls capable of attacking other mobs with their axes?



Although these adorable creatures don't have a problem with players, they won't hesitate to take on sea-based threats. They'll leave turtles and dolphins to their own devices however they'll attack any other threat.



They also have a clever defense mechanism: If an Axolotl is underwater damaged, it will die and then gain Regeneration. When an axolotl is killed by a mob the Regeneration status effect may temporarily be transferred to the player.
