Avanos Medical (U.S. Avanos Medical feeding tube Food and Drug Administration) has announced that it will be recalling Cortrak*2's Enteral access system. The recall was initiated in response to injuries sustained by patients and deaths resulting from the misplacement of nasoenteric/n tubes. Avanos Medical feeding tube The recall covers 629 devices in use throughout the United States.
Avanos is promoting the Cortrak*2 Ental Access System due to its ability to visualize a patient's stomach and small bowel. Avanos Medical recalls that there have been 60 injuries, 23 deaths and 23 illnesses that were caused by the improper placement or accidental inserting of nasogastric feeding tube while using the CORTRAK*2 Enteral Access System. Avanos Medical feeding tube The causes of the injuries are pneumothorax, respiratory failure and perforation. These are all forms of lung collapse.
Avanos Medical has described a plan to supply users with current labeling to verify the proper placement of nasogastric and nasoenteric tube prior to use.
The Avanos warning was the second FDA warning in 2022 regarding enteral feed tubes. The FDA cautioned healthcare professionals and parents about the risk of strangulation among children who are fed through tubes. Two cases of strangulation in children were reported in 2021.
