How to locate Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19

To find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19, you need to dig down below Y=15. This is the place at which you can increase your chances of finding Diamonds.

Minecraft 1.18 introduced several important changes to Minecraft's world generation. If you're playing Minecraft 1.18 or later you'll be able to go below Y=0, and into negative figures. Below Y=0 you will discover all the typical ores including Diamonds embedded in Deepslate Blocks instead of regular Stone blocks.

For more information on where you can find most concentrations of Diamonds or other resources, see the graph below:

Diamond starts generating at Y=15 and increases in frequency linearly the further you descend. To see the current Y-Level, press F3 and you'll be in a position to see the coordinates displayed. The current level of your lower half is indicated by the second number following "XYZ".

However, if the Diamond is set to be placed near an open air block during the world generation, it will have a chance of not reproducing. This makes it difficult to find diamonds in caves. You'll need to invest some time digging through the earth to increase the chances of finding them.

In short, to find diamonds quickly go as low as you can until you hit bedrock, then start strip-mining!

How to find Diamonds in Minecraft 1.17 and earlier versions

If you're playing Minecraft 1.17 or earlier, then you'll find Diamond Ore in every Overworld biome that is between the Y-levels 1-15. They usually appear at levels 5-12, therefore in order to maximize your chances of finding Diamonds, stay between these two levels.

Whichever version of Minecraft you're playing on, Diamonds will spawn in small veins that can be up to 9 blocks at a time, although sometimes you'll find larger veins comprised of multiple veins touching each one. Therefore, even at the best levels, Diamonds are pretty rare.

Best method for mining Diamonds in Minecraft

Diamond Ore can only be mined using an Iron Pickaxe or better. As of 1.18, Diamonds are far less prevalent in open spaces like caves. This means that to maximise your chances of finding Diamonds in Minecraft you must strip-mine in straight lines across all directions.
Games

The best way to mine Diamonds in Minecraft 1.19 is to dig down to level 57 and create a long 2-block-tall tunnel in any direction. Then, begin mining to either side of the tunnel in 2x1 tunnels. Each tunnel has a gap of 2 blocks.

Once you're satisfied you've strip-mined all Diamonds on this level, repeat the entire process until you reach level 53. If you dig in this way at both level -57 and -53, you'll be able see all Diamonds that appear between levels 58 and 51. This allows you to obtain the greatest amount of Diamonds without running into blocks of Bedrock which could otherwise slow down strip mining progress.

If you're playing on Minecraft 1.17 or earlier, you can apply this exact same method but using levels 6 and 10.

While mining, it's always a good idea to keep a water Bucket in your bag, as pockets of lava are frequent at these levels. To prevent mobs spawning in your tunnels, bring plenty of torchlight to illuminate your path. You can also illuminate your path with Night Vision potions - though it won't stop mobs from spawning.
