Java Edition's crafting table interface.
Crafting is the process of creating tools, items, and blocks in Minecraft. Players can craft by moving items from their inventory to a crafting grid and arranging them according to the recipe. A crafting table has access to three grids, including the 2x2 grid for crafting. Items created in the 2x2 grid can also be crafted in the crafting table.

2x2 Crafting grid (inventory)
3x3 Crafting grid (crafting table)
Creative, Survival, Adventure, and Spectator [Java Edition only] players are always able to access the 2x2 crafting grid via their inventory screen. Small crafting recipes that are at most 2x2 can be made there. This includes crafting tables as well as sticks, crafting boards, torches and other non-formless objects. To create items using a grid of 3x3 you need to create a crafting table with 4 wooden planks and place it in the middle of the universe and press the use button while facing it. This opens an interface that has a 3x3 crafting grid which the player can use to craft any crafting recipe in the game. You can also find all crafting recipes from the recipe book.
Some recipes don't require the ingredients be placed in a specific order on the grid for crafting. They are often referred to as recipes that are not shaped. For instance, players can create a fermented spider's eye by placing the ingredients anywhere on the grid. [note 1]
On the other side, many recipes need to have the ingredients in the correct relative positions on the crafting grid. They are also referred to as shaped recipes. Ingredients in recipes with a shape can be 'moved' up, down, left, or right. They can also be turned side-ways. A 3x1 recipe such as bread can be made with the top, middle, and bottom rows of the 3x3 grid. It is not possible to make using the 2x2 grid because it requires three ingredients to be covered. A bow is made by placing the strings on the left side instead.
Certain recipes are not able to be replicated or moved in this manner. These are commonly known as fixed recipes. For instance, dyes used in banner recipes must be precisely placed to create the desired pattern. *Bedrock Edition only. Fixed recipes can be added using mods or data packs.
Unlike other in-game actions like brewing, smelting, and the enchanting, crafting is totally silent.
This wiki's shapeless recipes are marked with two intertwined arrows on the crafting table graphic. This symbol is not used in the game. Recipe Book[]
The recipe book is a mechanic in Minecraft that serves as a cookbook of recipes and also as a crafting reference. It lists every crafting recipe the player has attempted with the help of materials.
There are a variety of ways to organize crafting recipes like the following:
- The first tab contains every recipe that is unlocked. The second tab includes weapons, armor, tools, and other items. The third tab includes building materials. The fourth tab is food items and other products. The fifth tab is filled with redstone materials. Recipe system[system for recipes
Recipes, such as crafting recipes, are customizable through data packs in Java Edition or add-ons in Bedrock Edition. As of 1.16 there are 379 crafting recipes.

Certain recipes can be animated to conserve space (requires JavaScript). This wiki labels recipes without shapes with a pair intertwined, connected arrows on its crafting table graphic. Recipes that are fixed for crafting are marked with an exclamation point. These symbols are not used in the game.
