The Minecraft monster shows no signs of slowing down. Today, developer Mojang announced that the block-building phenomenon has passed 100 million sales across all platforms including PC, Mac, consoles and mobile devices. Since the beginning of the year, around 53,000 copies of the game have been sold each day around the world. The game keeps players hooked too -- more than 40 million people boot up a Minecraft world every month to play around with blocks like an shovel, axe and sword. MY BLOG Apart from Tetris, few games have even come close to achieving the 100 million mark.
The game's open-ended structure unlimited possibilities and its potential for success are key factors to its success. As long as the geometry that faces outwards of the game is composed of colorful, simple blocks, players are able to create anything they like. The emphasis on imagination is the reason why many players, both old and young, have been attracted by the game and continue to play long after its release. Mojang has offered constant updates to the game, including new mechanics, creatures and materials. Its flexibility has made it a huge hit in the classroom, where it can be used to teach science, art, and coding.
Many wondered what Microsoft had in mind for Mojang when it acquired the company a couple of years back. A sequel? Perhaps an exclusive to Xbox, PC and Windows Phone? Nothing has worked out. Minecraft is now accessible on more platforms than ever before, and there's been no mention of the possibility of a Minecraft 2. Instead, we've seen a HoloLens version of the game as well as a spin-off adventure series by Telltale Games and an acquisition of MinecraftEdu, which will soon result in a brand new version that is focused on education. Minecraft. Soon there will be a special version for China as well.
Minecraft's popularity isn't waning. The game's strengths aren't an end-to-end story or amazing graphics -- because of this it has a timeless appeal that attracts youngsters as they become old enough to play it. As long as this continues, Minecraft will continue to sell in extraordinary numbers.
