Three Reasons to Visit the Sacred Heart Church
You may be wondering if The Sacred Heart Church in Newark, New Jersey, is worth your time. There are several factors to consider when selecting a church, including the church's founders and location. Read on to learn more about Sacred Heart Church. Here are three reasons it is worth checking out:

Sacred Heart Church

On May 30, 1965, the Sacred Heart Church was elevated to parish status. The first pastor, Father John A. Lubey, was appointed. Despite the fact that the church was small, the number of parishioners increased and seven Sunday Masses were being held at the nearby Belair Theater. Hence, a new church building was needed. This new structure would eventually become the Main Church, as it is currently called.

The devotion to the Sacred Heart developed from the Holy Wounds, a wound in the side of Jesus. Its first indications date back to the eleventh and twelfth centuries, in the atmosphere of Cistercian or Benedictine monasteries. The fervor and features of the devotion were revealed. For example, they included receiving Holy Communion on the first Friday of every month. On Saturdays, the church is closed.

Founders

The Founders of The Sacred Heart Church are a group of Catholic nuns who founded a parish in New Jersey. The Founders are also the names of the parish's first pastor and a local newspaper. Their work focuses on the spiritual and social welfare of the world. Founded in 1817, the Society of the Sacred Heart is a Catholic religious order and a member of the United Nations. The Founders of The Sacred Heart Church are considered special consultants to the UN's Economic and Social Council.

Founders of The Sacred Heart Church are also called the 'Pieters of the Sacred Heart'. The first pastor was Father Hugo Mentink, who served at the church from January 1960 until July 2, 1894. He was replaced by the Rev. James Klimecki on July 7, 1894. He labored at the parish until June 15, 1896. He had to step down due to poor health.

Location

The Sacred Heart Church is located on 143 Charles Street in Elk Rapids, MI. This historic landmark was built in 1879 by Jesuit priests and was once a magnificent house of worship. Today, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Inside, you'll find ninety-four stained-glass windows, a barrel-vaulted ceiling, and elaborately carved Italian marble altars.

Originally, the parish was laid out by Bishop Loughlin and comprised the area between Canton and Ryerson Streets and Myrtle and Flushing Avenues. The parish was led by the Rev. Thomas F. McGivern, who met the spiritual needs of the Catholics who lived in the area. The church was referred to as a chapel and eventually became a cathedral. While the parish had several incarnations, this one remains the most important building of the Sacred Heart parish.

Cost

The first church in the area was small, and when the University of Toronto was established in 1869, the leaders decided to build a larger one dedicated to Our Lady of the Sacred Heart. School funds helped to build the new building. However, as the school continued to grow, the needs of the community also expanded. The church was renamed to honor this honor. Today, the church still serves the community, and the congregation still gathers for services.

The Sacred Heart Church was constructed by the Jesuits and cost around $300,000. The exterior of the building looks similar to the original Romanesque architecture, and the interior has similar designs. The interior has 70 stained-glass windows, the most dramatic of which are the 17 vertical windows in the nave, which anchor each side of the transept. The church seats 650 people. However, if you're on a tight budget, you'll have to settle for an older, smaller church.
